Jr. Variety is a new generation of youth committed to fundraising for Variety – The Children’s Charity, a non–profit organization dedicated to inspiring hope, enriching lives and building a better future for the children of Southern California. The Jr. Variety board is made up of high school aged teenagers from different schools who are making a positive impact by hosting fundraising events and participating in volunteering opportunities that families can support and enjoy together.
Jr. Variety has been created to draw teens and young adults into philanthropic work; helping children who are disabled, abused, physically challenged, and/or underprivileged. Jr. Variety raises awareness among teenagers about the importance of giving back to their local communities and making a difference in the lives of children less fortunate.www.jrvarietysocal.org
In partnership with Jr. Variety, United Harmony’s Camp Harmony program provided a winter camp experience over President’s day weekend for homeless and underprivileged 12 to 14 year old children who were previously ineligible to attend this camp. Established in 1989, Camp Harmony was created to give impoverished children, ages 7 to 11, a valuable and memorable camping experience. Thanks to Jr. Variety’s generous financial support, the 2011 CampHarmony winter weekend also included middle school aged children for the very first time.
Jr.Variety board member Nicole Glantz approached the board and its advisors to help Camp Harmony to expand its program to include the older children as well. This invaluable camping experience for at risk pre teens and teens helps to develop their leadership skills, cultivates their self-assurance, and gives them the opportunity to see a bright, hopeful future. The long term benefits of this unique experience are numerous. Current college students, who were former Camp Harmony counselors return to camp to volunteer, and former campers are often recruited as counselors, and serve as an inspiration to the at risk children who attend the camp.
The President’s Day winter camping experience was extremely rewarding for Jr. Variety board members as well. The teen board members were invited to participate in a session at the winter camp and they saw firsthand how the funds Jr. Variety raised for Camp Harmony so positively impacts the lives of children less fortunate. The camp attendees were so moved by Jr. Variety’s commitment to help them, that when the Jr.Variety board members were introduced, the campers gave them a standing ovation.
Thank you to everyone who supported our 2012 Carnival! It was a huge success and with your help, we raised a lot of money for Variety’s Kids!
